When viewed against the backdrop of snow-capped mountains, Ávila is truly a spectacular sight. Its fully intact walls rise majestically from a hill, and the many semi-circular towers and 9 gates give it added character. Begun in the 11th century, these incredible fortifications are the symbol of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed city.
Partly built into the walls are the rather fortress-like cathedral and the Convent of Saint Teresa, erected in honour of the saint whose childhood was spent in a house on the same spot. Her relics are here, making it a popular pilgrimage spot. The city’s biggest festival is also in her honour and includes a colourful parade, fireworks and fights in the bullring.
Teresa entered the Incarnation Convent in Ávila, but found herself at odds with the practices, so founded a new monastery: the Convent of Saint Joseph. Of the city’s other religious structures, the Royal Monastery of Saint Thomas is particularly of note as it contains the tomb of Don Juan, son of King Fernando.
Other Ávila sights include the Torreón de los Guzmanes - a tower attached to the provincial council headquarters – and the Four Columns monument which offers fabulous city views.
The Ávila accommodation on Booking.com includes boutique hotels, traditional guest houses and cheap apartments near the train station.

Spent three nights at Le Vintage over Palm Sunday weekend and was glad I did. Avila is an historic, walled town and best not rushed through on a day trip from Madrid. Le Vintage was the PERFECT location with my room facing the street so I got to see all of the action/processions on the Saturday before Palm Sunday and then again on Holy Monday.

Impressive walls are surrounding the city and invite for a nice walk.
April seems the right moment to visit it. In summertime it may get very hot. The Sofraga Palacio Hotel is the best option to stay we think.

Avila is quite nice for sightseeing.
Avila is quite nice for sightseeing. My problem is with the food industry. We are vegan and the options for us to eat were poor at best. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The food represented as vegan to us was very poor quality, even at nicer restauraunts.

There is almost 2 miles of beautiful ancient city walls holding many interesting old residential structures accessible by small hilly alleys. As the streets are hilly so tourists need to have some comfortable walking shoes to explore the surrounding.

Avila got its unesco status because of its fortress wall and well deserved too. Wish we could walk on its parapet/battlement all the way round.
We ate all our meals at restaurants inside the wall like a lot of other tourists. If you can find fartons for breakfast, they are incredibly cheap and deliciously fresh.
I wish we were better informed by the tourist information centre (on same site as our hotel) about the Heullas Teresa de Jesus pilgrimage and be given a booklet to be stamped for our visit (as like for camino).
Hotel palacio de Monjaraz is a special and beautiful hotel that transported us to another time. The hotel is well keep and located, close to all the attractions in Avila. The room was big and beautifully decorated, old Spanish style, surprisingly we had a beautiful fire place and a sofa area in the room. The price is very fair and the communication with the Manegement was perfect. The lobby is impressive with different comfy areas to rest, and the breakfast was very good. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this place.
One of our favorite stops in Europe, this hotel's service was outstanding. The rooms are large and the furnishings beautiful. We felt as tho we had stepped into another era, surrounded by the antiquities. The restaurant kindly found us a meal, although they were closed for the rest of the evening. The area is very safe and would be good for kids. Near the city of Avila, Spain it is minutes from several interesting ancient sites.
It is hard to put into words how great this apartment is- literally built into the old town wall in Avila, steps from the main gate into the walled city. That's just the location. Beyond that the apartment is incredibly clean, well maintained and really comfortable- upgraded and modernized, but in a historic structure. Also, the best tapas, perhaps in Spain, literally at the door of the building. Strongly recommend!
Room was a triple room while I booked for a single. But double beds in Spain are small--maybe 140cm wide. That was nice for me. I liked the friendly staff but they spoke no English at all.
Parking 'on property' was 10 euros for the day, and it was their own parking space across the alley, underground.
Location is excellent as it's 100m away from the entrance of the city wall.
This excellent Hotel is very conveniently located just a block from the Avila train station. The bus stop for the number one bus which takes you to the St Vincent gate entry point to The Old City is right outside of the hotel door. The staff were superb, very helpful and informing me about the various bus routes and other matters. The double rooms are quite spacious and very nice
Almost everything. They do have parking, free garage connected by lift w hotel, with a lot of places and also street parking is safe and can be found even late evening, we arrived around 23h. Really great breakfast, staff was bringing cold cuts all the time, no waiting. Great for 7 euro. I would stay there again.
The house is situated in a quiet area inside the city walls. All of the rooms are spacious with comfortable beds. There is a washing machine and a dishwasher in the house. Parking is on the street but readily available beside the house. I consider this property the best I have stayed in while travelling in Spain.
We have asked for a quiet room and ist was as quiet as at home. Excelent. The hotel is elegant and very interesting with the old walls of the city included in the architecture of the hotel. Very good tee and coffe in the room. The car parking was very confortable. Thank you very much!
Great hotel in an excellent location for exploring Avila. We had a lovely suite which was so spacious, super clean and extremely comfortable. It was excellent value for money. The staff were very helpful and always in hand. I would thoroughly recommend.
Beautiful hotel in the old part of Avila. Renovated, modern interiors with all the comforts of a 5 star hotel. Elegant spacious rooms with old parts of walls and fabric colors perfectly blending. Very comfortable beds and delicious à la carte breakfast.
The location was exceptional - as was the breakfast. The hotel is located next to the Cathedral and you could just step out of the door into the ancient streets of Avila.
Loved the hotel's colonnaded interior courtyard - so airy and spacious.
Convenient location for the old centre of Avila - although be aware that there are some fairly steep slopes to negotiate! We booked a Superior room, but were provided with a Suite, which was very comfortable.
The property is perfectly located with a good access to the old town of Avila. The host is very nice and responsive. Also the appartment is well maintain.
