Botaira was the perfect base for our stay in Shetland. From the outside, it looks a bit like a glorified beach hut but inside it is a really comfortable 2 bedroom cottage. There is a lovely open plan sitting/dining/kitchen area with 2 really comfortable sofas and lovely views over the bay and to the south end of the island of Bressay. The kitchen is very well equipped such that it Is totally possible to self cater (unlike many other supposedly self-catering properties we have stayed at); the bedrooms offer one double bed and either a super-king or two singles. The double room has the same lovely views and a large built in wardrobe with lots of hanging and shelf space. There is a bath with over-bath shower and the water pressure is excellent so the shower is very effective and there was always plentiful very hot water.
Botaira is situated at the end of a single track road in a small, very quiet residential area about 10 minutes from Lerwick and provides an excellent base for exploring the Shetlands. There is a lovely sheltered beach in the bay overlooked by the cottage, although there is no direct path, so getting there takes slightly longer than we initially expected; had I remembered my swimming costume I would definitely have been in for a swim.
Absolute peace and quiet. But it's different to the mainland in that you need transport to reach the shops etc. Sandwick is ideal for walking or going on the ferry to Mousa. There is a small visitor centre that tells you quite a bit about the history of the area.

Sandwick is a small village about 12 miles south of Lerwick and easily accessible by road. It has a good cafe/tearoom with gift shop. There is also a bakery, woolen product shops and newly opened Spar shop. Tirricks lies just above the village and provides Seaview to 2 sides of the bungalow.
