The apartment is beautiful—spacious, well-decorated, and spotlessly clean. The rooms are immaculate, and the cleaning staff is both kind and efficient. The old town has some wonderful architecture and a beautiful square full of life. The main street is stylish and people very friendly. But it was devastated in 2006 (?) by a powerful earthquake and there is still a lot of building work.

My third visit to this beautifully situated city was my first since the earthquake of 2009. The city with its bounty of beautiful, historic palazzi and churches is still in a state of recovery, but its spirit seems undiminished, and I found my memories of its liveliness and as home to some of the nicest people in Italy still accurate. Because of the broad range of reconstruction still going on, driving can be a challenge in the city center, which makes arriving by public transport from Rome, Sulmona or Pescara a better option. Walking, once you do arrive, will prove to be its own reward. There are
still numerous venerable cafes and some very good restaurants. If I had to recommend one it would be Antologie on via Vestusti, a short walk from the Piazza Duomo.
