Having been to Izumo before and knowing it would not disappoint, I decided to take my family for another vacation in January.
We stayed at Nipponia Izumo - Hirata Cotton Road for three nights. It is a former traditional sake brewery house converted into a kominka style hotel.
Situated on a quiet historical sake and soy sauce business street, the hotel not only provided a unique home sweet home service but also amazing fine dining experience. Their in-house chef made each meal using local products to create feasts that delighted the senses.
I highly recommend this hidden gem of an accommodation if you do visit Izumo.

Rita Izumo is an ancient warehouse that has been beautifully renovated.
The inside in ancient wood is very cosy, every object has been chosen with care and taste.
Very comfortable space, lovely fresh flowers in every room.

The staff service was exceptional. This is definitely our favourite Ryokan. The bathing facilities are great, especially after long walks! Next time we are back in Izumo we will definitely book this hotel.

A very quiet city in the remote Sanin region, from exploring the lores of the region to the food throughout the city, it was a great trip. The only note is that the shops here close earlier so you do have to set off earlier compared to usual. Other spots nearby that could be explored were Matsue and Yonago.

We found Matsue very walkable, the people were so friendly, and the city was a peaceful change from the larger cities. We also found a wonderful daytrip from there--Yuushien Garden was an inspiring spot, and the bus trip there and back was so interesting. We visited in early October, and also got to enjoy the Matsue Water Lantern Festival.

You can literally stay here all day as there's so much to see whether it's big or something so small. There are many eateries around. Get the bus from izumo station it doesn't take long. Remember take an umbrella as it gets quite hot. And just enjoy what is around 😃

The tourist information Centre was great.
The tourist information Centre was great. Had good information and most. There is a loop bus to take you to the Castle and other points. The observation deck at the Bank was wonderful. The views spectacular of Matsue. Looked a tidy place, well looked after and comfortable to visit.

Izumo is such a historical significance place for Japan, is a must visit if you want to know Japan history and culture. Not to miss is the soba as the texture is slightly more chewy. And of cause the onsen, is great! Did I mention the people are super friendly which made my stay unforgettable.

Fantastic scenery and food.
Fantastic scenery and food. Check out the beaches to the North but don't worry about the local mountain lookouts. They were all atrocious one lane roads in bad condition which only took you 3/4's of the way up the mountain which was then followed by your needing to walk another 1000 steps or more to get to the top. Good if you want the cardio but terrible in the middle of summer.
