We had spent substantial a time in yuma before this trip.
We had spent substantial a time in yuma before this trip. This time we had to complete dental work in Mexico but also enjoyed walking around old town. Casino lovers will find 3 casinoes within a few miles. Also enjoyed fantastic Blue Grass Festivals at the fairgrounds in prior years.
The old prison is worthwhile to see.

Yuma is an agricultural desert town.
Yuma is an agricultural desert town. It is old and has some historical sites to see. But, from my perspective, it is a bedroom community to Los Algodones, Baja, Mexico. So drive 10 minutes to the Indian Casino parking and walk across the border. It's more fun and profitable to stay and eat at some great restaurants in Yuma, while spending days across the border in Mexico doing touristy stuff, talking with people, and enjoying the best medical tourism. Get teeth done, glasses, massages, aesthetic surgery and treatments, street tacos, pharmacy, souvenirs (You can afford it all!). The people there are great and there to serve you. Talk to them. Get to know them and ENJOY!

Algodones is a safe and friendly town offering world class dental care, prescription eyeglasses and pharmaceuticals (274 Dentists, 150 opticians and 80 pharmacies…more or less) at a much lower price than the US. If you can get to Yuma, just out of town is a 5 minute border crossing (very easy walk) that can save you thousands of dollars. During the day there are probably more Canadians and Americans than Mexicans in town. By 5pm, even the Mexicans seem to have left as it is a ghost town. Hotel California provides a bar and a restaurant until early evening. After that there are a couple of pharmacies and gas station that stay open late. Oh there are a couple of girly bars, but I only walked by and listened to their sales pitch. Not to convincing! The people are all friendly and appreciate the presence of foreigners.

Yuma is great for a one or two night stay to learn about the history of the western United States. I've lived in Southern California since the 1960s and didn't understand until my visit to Yuma how important its location was for trade and travel for hundreds of years.
The riverfront walkway/park and Territorial Prison have great explanatory signs about the indigenous Quechuan people, and the explorers and settlers who came later.
I stayed for one night. I could have had plenty of sightseeing for two nights if the Colorado River museum was open (it was closed Monday when I was there.)

If your main language is English, you will have no problem communicating in Los Algodones. The people who live and work there are friendly and helpful and accustomed to a constant flood of foreigners coming for medical services, mostly dental. Many clinics include transportation service as there are no taxis. There are a few three star hotels which are quite serviceable and other smaller comfortable hotels to choose from. Dining out is usually not too expensive, from just grabbing a smoothie or a coffee and a snack to enjoying a delicious sit down dinner in one of many popular restaurants. Follow your nose to find the tastiest food. Pharmacies are almost as ubiquitous as are the dental clinics. Molar City, as it is sometimes called, is not a resort kind of town. Its economy is based on medical tourism.
