Alikampos is a great old village (over 1,000 years old),...

Alikampos is a great old village (over 1,000 years old), with 2 tavernas on the central square. The village is about 600 m above sea level, which means in the summer it's a few degrees cooler than at sea level. Talking about the sea, it's only about 15 min drive to Georgioupolis, where you can find great beaches, lots of restaurants, bars and cafes, etc. Alikampos is quiet outside the main (summer) season, but is bustling with life in the summer whilst still keeping the village atmosphere. Just outside the village is an old Byzantine church which one can visit and is full of beautiful, ancient frescos. The village is about 30-40 min drive to Rethymno (absolutely gorgeous city) and about 40-50 min drive to Chania (also a beautiful ancient city with lots of activities). Towards the south, Alikampos is about 45-60 min drive to Choria Sfakia - you will pass the Imbros Gorge which is great to walk! - , from where you can take the ferry to Loutro, or Agio Roumeli, which is where the Samaria Gorge finishes. We'll definitely come back!

My own and my sister's family, together with my mum, stayed...

My own and my sister's family, together with my mum, stayed at Villa Halases in Alikampos and honestly, we didn’t want to leave. Everything about this place was just perfect – peaceful, beautifully done, and incredibly welcoming. The villa itself has been recently renovated, and you can really tell. It’s modern and stylish, but still keeps that cozy, Cretan charm. Everything was super clean and well looked after – from the comfy beds to the sparkling bathrooms (5 in total) and the lovely kitchens (2 large ones and a smaller one upstairs). You could tell the owners put so much care into every detail. Speaking of which – the hosts were amazing. So kind, helpful, and genuinely warm people. They were there if we needed anything, but also gave us total privacy. It felt like we were staying at a friend’s home, not just a rental. The location is perfect – tucked away in the quiet village of Alikampos with stunning mountain views, but still really close to beaches, tavernas (the one in Maza is an absolute MUST- a truly hidden gem!), and day trips around Apokoronas and Chania (e.g. the archeaological museum is fantastic). Also walking the Imbros gorge is absolutely recommendable, it took us about half hour to get there. We loved waking up to birdsong and ending the day with a glass of wine by the pool. The outdoor area? Just wow. The pool and garden are so peaceful, and there are so many spots to sit, relax, read, or enjoy a meal. It’s exactly what you picture when you dream of a holiday in Crete. We left feeling completely recharged and already talking about when we can come back. If you’re looking for a place to truly unwind and feel at home in Crete, Villa Halases is it. Can’t recommend it enough!

From Alikambos, you can reach the north coast in all directions via various routes, and also the south coast via the highway through Imbros. The roads are well-maintained and a pleasure to drive for those who enjoy curves and bends.
