Amazing place, in the middle of Koyasan, so everything is super close. The place is really clean and have all of the amenities. Tommy is amazing, when I arrived he gave me all the recommendations to do in Koyasan Don’t miss the ceremony at the temple in the morning, it’s a life changing experience, and without Tommy, I wouldn’t even know

I stayed here in mid-November, 2025. First of all, I feel that the price I paid was extremely reasonable for everything that I got. Convenient location with bus stops very close by. Really appreciated that some of the staff knew some English. It was very helpful for me, as my Japanese is very limited. Upon arrival you are given your own labeled personal pair of slippers to wear inside the temple. One of many thoughtful gestures at this temple. You are also welcomed with hot matcha and a couple of sweet treats! Dinner and breakfast exceeded my expectations for vegetarian cuisine...so much variety packed with so many different flavours! I personally enjoyed eating alone in my own private dining room, but I’m sure not everyone will feel that way. My room was a decent size. The futon itself was much more comfortable than I had been expecting, and I was very grateful for the heavy blankets provided. I also REALLY appreciated the space heaters in the bedroom and dining room. They were a life-saver!! I was also very appreciative of the heated toilet seats when I had to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. It's a small detail, but it made a huge difference to me. Thank you for having that feature available! The morning prayers and fire ceremony were a captivating sight to behold. Huge thank you to the monks for providing us laypeople the chance to experience them. The scenery at this temple--in fact, everywhere in Koyasan--was breathtaking! Personally, my favourite part was the koi pond! I could have spent days sitting there in peaceful contemplation. It was so soothing. It made me chuckle seeing a vending machine inside a Buddhist temple...but it IS Japan, after all! I didn't need to use it while I was there, but it made me feel better knowing that other drink options were available should I desire them. Thank you so much to all of the staff at Komyoin for making my trip so magical. I will never forget it.

We stayed two nights in Koyasan at Fugen-in temple and it left a long-lasting impression of serenity and kindness. The temple has a long history and many works of art. Attending the morning prayer was a meditative experience. The monks were very friendly and explained about the Haiku temple in Fugen-in's garden. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, so well-balanced and lovingly prepared. The room was clean and had everything we needed, we felt well taken care of. The water of the onsen was very hot and relaxing. Fugen-in's location is perfect, very central and right around the corner of the tourist information. What also stays with us is the beautiful sound of the local cicadas.

This hotel was impressive with a grand entrance, ornate furniture in the foyer and a really old wisteria growing in the front yard that had a trunk as big as a sizeable tree. We were welcomed with tea and given an explanation of the hotel and when our meals would be served. Our room was spacious with an outlook over a lovely landscaped terrace to the main garden beyond. The kaiseki dinner and breakfast here were vegan and given the restrictions in ingredients they can work with, both meals were impressive and, as usual with Japanese food, artistically presented by efficient staff. The hotel has a temple attached and we would recommend attending the early morning prayer ceremony. The chanting by the head priest and 2 other monks was quite moving. Koya-san is a beautiful town and well worth visiting.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed.

This is a world heritage site not to be missed. The kindness and quiet beauty and the FOOD were heavenly. A friend suggested we go and stay a night in a temple for the full experience, (although a day trip is fine,) and we are so glad that we did. The Buddhist Okunoin cemetery is the largest in Japan and is lit by lanterns at night for a beautiful otherworldly (but actually this world! ;) unforgettable evening walk. Beautiful temples and sacred sites to visit, and many shops and little cafes to enjoy. We stayed in the Sanboin temple and were so delighted by our experience.

Don't miss touring the cemetery.

Don't miss touring the cemetery. It is amazing with so many different types of monuments and statuary. We toured it without a guide during the day light hours and feel that we really didn't miss anything by not seeing it by moonlight. The town has an ancient feel to it and is worth spending at least one night. I just wish that there were more choices for hotels as the only choices seem to be a Guest House and a multitude of Monasteries.

Koyasan is a historic, spiritual, naturally beautiful location. The ability to be around active temples and attend fire ceremony was unforgettable. The information center and excellent bus system made it easy to navigate. However, if you like to walk, most sights are easily walked to, as it is quite flat. There were several nice coffee houses and the place that offers night tours of Okunoin also is a bar in the evening, serving excellent local craft beers. A surprise.

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.

Thoroughly enjoyed experiencing how the monks live and eat. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, wondered into the info centre Saturday & they were very helpful. Walked through the cemetery & then had lunch in one of the cafes open. Not many open on a Saturday or Sunday. Sunday a.m we experience the Ceremony half by the Monks in the main temple. Wouldn’t visit again in the winter as it’s extremely cold.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely.

Okunoin cemetery --meditative walk-- was lovely. Would have enjoyed having more time to visit the town. We only stayed one night (which is good, because it was very expensive). However, the train logistics from Okayama meant that we ararived in Koyasan about 2pm and so had very little time to see it. We left after lunch the following day. Two fuller days and one night would have been ideal.

Yochi-in was a wonderful way of experiencing a traditional temple stay in Japan. We both enjoyed being welcomed with tea and sweets. The room was cosy with traditional tatami mats. The food was delicious too! We thoroughly enjoyed being able to participate in the morning practice. Our time in Koyasan and the stay at Yochi-in was a memorable experience that will for a long stay in our hearts. We highly recommend it!

Nice guesthouse at the outskirts of historic Koyasan temples, that can be easily reached on foot. We slept in a sort of suite with two ambients and altogether five beds (with room for a sixth) and private bathroom. Cosy place, clean and quiet, several room services provided, although the hot water dispenser was not working properly (but there is a microwave available in a common room). Very gentle and helpful owner.

The temple/hotel is lovely, we had a smaller Japanese room which was of good size and an own bathroom which is always nice. The food in this hotel was splendid, it's one of the reasons we picked this rather pricey place because all the reviews raved about the food and they had a point. We loved everything we ate here and we are carnivores!
