This hotel has great staff. The receptionist was very welcoming, helpful and spoke brilliant English. He was happy to offer restaurant recommendations which no-one does any more. The morning receptionist asked us if everything had been OK during our stay. This is a first for us, a hotel which actually cares to ask if you had a nice stay. So well done. Our room was lovely, just big enough, with air con, a comfortable bed and a great shower. We also had the bonus of a small balcony from which we enjoyed watching the sun go down over the river. The room had a fridge, fancy coffee machine with two free pods, free bottled water and free toiletries. All very much appreciated. Location is great, it is right in the center of town. And while this means they do not have a car park, there is a large, free car park located just down the hill, below the hotel. You can park the car, then take the lift up, and walk two minutes to the hotel entrance. Very convenient. Breakfast was beautifully laid out and delicious. We throughly enjoyed bacon, scrambled eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast, with great coffee. We would return here again just for the breakfast, and the lovely staff.

Everything! Everything about our stay at the Monverde was just wonderful. The staff went the extra mile in terms of small things that make a really big difference, from a complimentary glass of bubbly on arrival, to special shampoo and shower gel for kids left by the bath for our two year old son! The location was beautiful and the food exquisite. We shall certainly be returning to Monverde.

It was perfect. Extremely beautiful place, installation and decoration. Inside the apartment we have everything we need. Little supermarket very close, and a good location to go and explore the north of Portugal. To receive the breakfast in a basket it is a very warm experience. The fireplace it’s not just beautiful, but easy to use and keep the room very warm and comfortable. There is also air conditioner, but of course it doesn’t have the same charm. I super recommend and I hope to back in summer to use the gorgeous pool.

The house is amazing in it's stature and some of it's decoations indication recent and past grandeur. The bed, very comfy. The view, 5 minutes from Amarnate, in lush green hillside with 10-20km views (we had the end bedroom looking out over the valley and the inner patio) Louisa! The most friendly and caring host we have met in a long time. There at 6am and still there at 11pm to make sure all her guests have the best stay at her Casa Fontau. She has a very extensive breakfast, prepared with the love of a grandmother and this is INCLUDED - wow! Also, ask her anything and she will help you out in 5 languages at the same time if needed.

It’s my hometown so I’m biased but I think it’s gorgeous, the views are incredible. It’s small and quaint but that’s part of the charm. It’s very community driven, everyone is friendly, some of the best food you’ll ever eat and it’s the perfect place to relax. If you need a getaway from the world and to just tune in with nature; Amarante is the place to go. I would definitely go to the traditional spots to eat so you can learn a little bit of history as well as get a great bite. I also heavily recommend riding the little boats in the river Tâmega.

Amarante is beautiful with a real feel of an old town in its centre. The cathedral in particular is well worth visiting. The local government has invested a lot in the public realm which is now very attractive and clean, with lovely walks along and across the river. Amarante has a good supply of restaurants and hotel accommodation to suit all budgets.

One of the most beautiful, picturesque cities I have seen.

One of the most beautiful, picturesque cities I have seen. Highly recommend to visit it, specially in July, when the Festival Mimo happens with lot of international and local musicians, artists are presenting their concerts. It is very democratic event for all ages, including activities like painting workshops, instrument experimentation, storytelling, and much more, all in an environment full of color and creativity. Me and my family loved it for the second year and we will definitely return.

My wife and I spent four nights using Amarante as our base...

My wife and I spent four nights using Amarante as our base for the Duoro and North areas. The view from the bedroom and patio was amazing. Great food at multiple restaurants in town. quiet location where the church bells don’t ring after 10pm until 8am. Property manager communication was excellent.

Very active friendly. 4km of beautiful walking trails along each side of the river (total of 8km). The 41km bike path Ecopista was stunning. Mountains are just a few km away with endless trails for biking and hiking.

unbelievable charm in such a small accessible area ... the historical center is very clean and orderly, surrounded and infused with nature nature nature. Just follow the river paths into this green wonderland so safe , mellow, natural , yet elegant !

Breakfast was amazing. The restaurant at dinner was very good as well. The room was spectacular and perfectly cleaned. The view is breathtaking and it was really one of the best hotels to rest where I've had the pleasure to stay. I can't say this enough: the staff is wonderful. Specially the ones in the restaurant at dinner. Top quality! Best regards and thank you for the wine recommendations.
