Our stay was exceptional. We booked the property based on its proximity to Monsanto but were very pleasantly surprised to find that there was a trail directly from the casa to a castle and fossils, just a few minutes walk away. We were greeted with fresh bread, fruits, water, wine, and cheese (and air conditioning!) which was wonderful after a long drive. Our dog was warmly greeted and a food/water bowl was provided. This property was by far the most overall luxurious rental that we’ve stayed in Portugal (after stays throughout the country over the past 6 months). I would put it in the Airbnb Luxe category. Plush towels, massive walk-in shower, high end finishes, high-end appliances (including a washing machine with complimentary quality detergent for use), plush towels, quality dinnerware and cooking supplies, spices and olive oil there were high quality (not just random things that other people likely had just left behind), a generous amount of coffee pods and tea, an assortment of games and books, and quality furniture. There was a high attention to detail throughout and the casa was spotless. Great communication, friendliness, and a desire to go above and beyond to be helpful and make us feel at home.

I wish we had been able to stay for longer as Monsanto is beautiful and our accommodation was really special. It was very clean, warm and comfortable, had all the facilities we needed, and was full of character and unique and thoughtful touches. We loved the patio and the views above and below.

The location and view are exceptional. Fascinating village to walk around. The hosts were great with communication and picked up our bags straight away (the streets are too narrow to drive to the accommodation… you park at the start of the village). They also booked dinner for us at a restaurant (which also had a similar stunning view!) Old house was extremely well equipped and was spacious. Great stay. Recommended

This was our most memorable place to stay in Portugal. It wasn’t just one thing that made this place special, it was everything from the Moors Castle to the cobblestone alleys. This was a trip going back centuries just by walking through the streets and alleys. The medieval concert held in the church was the icing on the cake. We’ve forgotten almost every other hotel we’ve stayed in, but we’ll probably never forget this stay. Our hostess was a remarkable woman.

Penha Garcia felt like one of the Andalusian "Puebla Blancas...

Penha Garcia felt like one of the Andalusian "Puebla Blancas" which are just cross the border, and that is high praise. The roads are steep and cobbled, so cycling is problematic. But the locals were lovely and the views from the hillside across to Monsanto Castelo and to Serra da Estrella are amazing.

Small quaint village on crest of hillside, 15 minutes away...

Small quaint village on crest of hillside, 15 minutes away from Monsanto. Castelo ruins on top to hike to and we saw some trails up in the hills behind the town which were lovely, but too hot for hiking in 41 degree weather. The municipal pool fed with fresh water in a small valley is a lovely area to explore. People are friendly and helpful.
