Owner was friendly and very kind. Only about 30 min from Takachiho shrine, sightseeing area by the car. I will love to come back again!

We loved our stay at this cottage in the woods at the base of the mountains. It was me, my husband and our nearly 5 year old daughter. It was set up so wonderfully for a family, with thoughtful touches for kids of any age. It rained every day of our stay, but my girl was kept well occupied with the well stocked toy closet with lots of toys and games for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kids. She delighted in the indoor hammock. There were children’s bowls and utensils in the kitchen, a toddler potty seat in the loo. The combo washer-dryer was appreciated so we could do laundry at this stop in our road trip. Everything was well labeled with instructions in English. The bed and the loft bed were both very comfortable. The beds were made with light blankets for warm weather, and there were warmer blankets in the closet in case it turned cold. An air con heat pump and a fan kept things comfortable in the changeable autumn temperatures. Location is “in the middle of nowhere”, but we were expecting that and enjoyed the countryside lifestyle. We took nature walks down the country lanes and farmland pathways. There’s a lovely atmospheric old shrine around the corner. The owner provides a bilingual map of favourite places in the area, which we enjoyed exploring. A covered playground about 5 minutes’ drive away was perfect for fresh air on rainy afternoons. Gokuraku Onsen, about 8 minutes drive away, is worth a visit, with lovely indoor and outdoor baths. There’s a small town with a local supermarket and 7-11 about 8 minutes away in the other direction, and a larger town (Kobayashi) about 15 minutes away with plenty of restaurants. It’s a great base for exploring Kirishima, Kobayashi, Ebino, and the surrounding national parks, hiking trails and forests. Would definitely recommend it for families looking to get a taste of rural living in Japan, or even couples looking for a romantic secluded retreat.
