Alongside our Villa la Vega and the holiday apartments we cultivate, on the island of Lanzarote in Tias, also wines. Agriculture in Lanzarote Necessity is the mother of invention. After the terrible volcanic eruptions in the 18th Century, the Lanzaroteños have discovered that trees, whose roots were covered with volcanic ashes, grew significantly better. Now the Lanzaroteños dug, till they reached fertile soil, and planted gape vines into the ground. The Picón (volcanic ash) is permeable and allows that the scarce rainfall gets quickly into the soil and thus can be taken up by the roots. The volcanic ash reduces evaporation and takes the dew, by capillary action, to the roots of the plants. Not only in the wine growing region is this type of dry land farming being used, but it is also used for the cultivation of potatoes, onions, garlic, corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, melons and cactuses. Tias Our Villa la Vega and Apartments are located and overlooking the popular village of Tias. Inhabitants: Almost 19000 (including Puerto del Carmen, Asomada, Mácher, Masdache,Conil and Vega de Tegoyo). On a small mountain slope, four kilometers above Puerto del Carmen, lies the village and our apartment complex with our four holiday flats. The municipality of Tias has an area of 64.6 square kilometers and is located 200 metros above sea level. Part of the municipality are the villages Puerto del Carmen, La Asomada, Macher, Masdache, Conil de Vega Tegoyo. In the earlier days, most of the inhabitants of Tias worked in agriculture, today it is one of the most popular residential areas of Lanzarote. Specially the central and good location, the wonderful climate and good infrastructure is very much appreciated. From Supermercado to fruit shop, fish shop, butcher, bakeries, banks, pharmacies, boutiques, organic shop, etc you will find everything here and yet it is peaceful and quiet in Tias.
