It is the island's head of municipality located at the HIGHEST ALTITUDE, as well as Gran Canaria's LEAST POPULATED municipality. ★ Artenara means 'place hidden among rocks' in the Aboriginal language. It is a privileged viewpoint of the 2 most impressive geological elements of Gran Canaria: Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga. It is a sought-after destination for those who go hiking, trail running, or biking. The town is surrounded by PERFECTLY MARKED walking trails. ★ The municipality is one of the greatest exponents of the CAVE HOUSES tradition in Gran Canaria. Their use dates back to the first aborigines and was common until the middle of the last century.
