Castle Acre was quiet and a bit off the beaten path. The town itself provided things to see - the castle ruins and the priory and was a comfortable base for exploring further afield.

Welcome pack of milk and biscuits, also tea and coffee supplied. Well-stocked with cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils. We have a 'holiday trunk' packed with necessities but wasn't needed on this occasion. Lovely location.

Property information

Located in a picturesque historical conservation area, Church Cottage is an exquisite flint and pantile semi-detached property that boasts uninterrupted views of a magnificent 14th century church, and offers storage for bicycles. Nestled in the peaceful and tranquil setting of Castle Acre, this historical village draws visitors from far afield around the year.

Neighbourhood information

Deriving its name from the 12th century Norman walled castle that once stood, Castle Acre is a most fascinating and historical village. The remains, Castle Acre Priory and Castle, are one of the largest and best preserved monastic sites. The village church, St. James, is also a spectacle to behold. Amenities in the village include a village shop, fish and chip shop, and a small Budgens store. For walking, the Peddars Way is an ancient Roman path stretching for 46 miles, which begins in Thetford, South Norfolk and travels northwards to the coast near Holme-next-the-Sea. The path enters Castle Acre at the foot of Bailey Street and continues through the village and beyond, to the border of the beautiful village of Great Massingham, a distance of approximately four miles. Be sure to drop into the Dabbling Duck as your reward! Starting in Kings Lynn, The Nar Valley Way is 34 miles long, and travels through the southern breadth of Castle Acre towards Lexham, finishing in Dereham. In Castle Acre, footpaths traverse the water meadows and fields, allowing walkers to pass through under the Countryside Stewardship agreement. Signs and boards indicate where these fields are, with some near to the Priory and others in the east of the parish. Less than a twenty minute drive away is Fakenham, renowned for its popular weekly market. Fakenham Racecourse is one of the finest rural national hunt horse racecourses in the country. For something very different try Norfolk Padel near Fakenham, where you can hire state-of-the-art courts for this fast-growing racquet sport. The town is also home to Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve, nationally and internationally recognised as important for the wildlife resides there. The Red Lion offers superb a la carte options. For something more relaxed in a summer meadow, The Fat Cow is great for families, serving grass fed beef and soft serve ice-cream. Just a mile from Fakenham is Sculthorpe Mill.
