Elizabeth Ann Hughes invites you to come and relax in luxury in her delightful Scaurbridge House, Penpont, Thornhill, a graded listed Georgian manse. The perfect place to unwind. Stylishly decorated with care and attention to detail, mixing traditional and vintage with contemporary looks, there is something interesting to look at around every corner. Conveniently positioned for Glasgow, Edinburgh, Ayr and Carlisle. Small private country house offering bed and breakfast all tailored to make your stay the very best at the most reasonable price. Welcoming, romantic, log fires, beautiful garden and scenery, great local food.

I live in a very special part of the world and it would be selfish not to share it with you! I have been welcong guests from all over the world for almost 25 years and have never met one from whom I couldn't learn something new. This is why I love doing what I do. I don't see it as a job but more of a passion for giving my guests a feeling of wellbeing and being cared for. When I am not hosting guests I love painting huge abstract canvasses, my garden, reading, speaking French, all kinds of dancing and cooking for my friends and family. A typical evening for us is to enjoy a welcome drink together with a catch up on what exciting things we have been doing, followed by a relaxed home cooked meal then perhaps some singing and dancing, the perfect evening! I am also a specialist in cultured pearls and travel around the UK sharing my passion for pearls (Nature's works of Art in my opinion) and their history. I have a wonderful selection which you are welcome to browse, with no obligation

Scaurbridge House is just 4 miles from Drumlanrig Castle and 30 from Dumfries House. Fishing, shooting, walking, birdwatching, country pursuits and lots of unspoilt nature are in abundance here or nearby. Let me organise an itinerary or wander at will if you prefer. Whatever you choose, you can be assured of my attention to detail and to your individual requirements. Penpont is the birthplace of Joseph Thomson, the African explorer and the home of world renowned artist Andy Goldsworthy. Not far from Dumfries House, Crawick Multiverse, Charles Jencks' Garden of Cosmic Speculation, Craigdarroch House where Annie Lawrie (of the famous song) lived after her marriage and the Galloway Forest and Dark Sky Observatory. If art is your pleasure, there are sculptures by Henry Moore, Rodin and Epstein nearby and many interesting local artists offer visits to their studios showing a highly eclectic range of works during Spring Fling weekend at the end of May and throughout the year. Robert Burns farmed at Ellisland, just 10 miles away and Greyfriars Church was the scene of the killing of the Red Comyn by Robert the Bruce. Penpont lies approximately two miles west of the River Nith.
