OMIŠALJ If you take a walk through its old historical core and visit the historical monuments, this small town will tell many stories from its rich history and provide pleasant holidays to every visitor. In the 12th century Omišalj is mentioned as “Castri musculi”(this is from the Latin “Ad musculi” meaning “the place of shells”), but it has in fact prehistoric foundations. The development of the city can be traced from the ancient times of Liburnians and Romans, over the times of the counts Frankopan of Krk, and up to today. Since the 11th century Omišalj is an important centre of literacy and glagolitism. The first written documents date from the 12th century. Omišalj is located in the north-west of the island of Krk, on the part of the island that is the closest to the coast. It is situated on a cliff and dominates the surrounding area of Kvarner. Thanks to the favorable climate and the fact that it is close to the bridge, to the airport and Rijeka, Omišalj is an attractive tourist destination.
