Pollenzo is a Center of Enogastronomic Excellence: The beating heart of Pollenzo is the Agenzia di Pollenzo, an eighteenth-century complex that was once the royal estate of Carlo Alberto of Savoy. Today, it hosts three fundamental pillars for the world of food and wine: * University of Gastronomic Sciences (UNISG): Founded by Slow Food, this university attracts students from all over the world and is a center for research and education on food, sustainability, and gastronomic culture. Its presence imbues the village with a lively and international atmosphere. * Banca del Vino (Wine Bank): Housed in the Agenzia's historic cellars, the Banca del Vino preserves an impressive collection of Italy's finest wines. It offers tasting tours and the opportunity to purchase rare labels, representing a true "historical memory" of Italian wine. Pollenzo is rich in Roman and Savoy History: Pollenzo has very ancient origins. It was the ancient Roman city of Pollentia, mentioned by Pliny the Elder and known for the battle of 402 A.D. against the Visigoths. Its Roman origins are still visible: the center of the village, for example, is built on the foundations of an ancient Roman amphitheater, with houses arranged in concentric circles. In the 19th century, Carlo Alberto of Savoy transformed Pollenzo into a "royal country residence," undertaking an ambitious project that included the restoration of the Royal Castle of Pollenzo (one of the Savoy Royal Residences, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997), the Church of San Vittore (with its imposing neo-Gothic facade), and the creation of a model agricultural estate. This Savoyard imprint is still strong and lends significant elegance and historical importance to the village.
