RIONE MONTI Monti is the name of the 1st Rione of Rome. The name comes from the fact that monti in Italian means hills and this quarter use to include different hills of Rome: the Esquiline, the Viminal, part of the Quirinal and of the Celio. Actually the Quirinal, Castro Pretorio and the Celio are not included in this quarter anymore but its original name remained. Its court of arms its composed by three green hills in a silver background. The Rione is 168 hectares and has 14654 inhabitants which means 8720 inhabitants per square kilometre. Among the Roman period the area was really populated: there were the imperial fora and the Subura, actually know as Suburra, that was the most popular part of the quarter. In the Subura used to live the plebeian, there were lots of lupanari (prostitute houses) and bad reputation inns. In the Middle Ages the situation changed: the Roman aqueducts where so much damaged and it was really difficult to let the water feed that area because among the time the level of the quarter had raised a lot. The inhabitants decided to move to other areas like the Campo Marzio or the plain in between the hills. The Monti inhabitants were used to drink the Tiber’s water that during that time was drinkable.
