Akemi Lucas (also known by her artist name ‘Koshu’) has been learning Japanese Calligraphy since she was 8 years old and has been teaching since attaining her master status at the age of 24. She first opened Dream House in 1992 as a Calligraphy and English school. However, from 2001, she relocated to England and continued to teach the art forms for around 23 years while engaging in cultural projects and events all over the world. In the autumn of 2024, she returned to Japan to reopen Dream House once again and welcome students from both Japan and from all over the world. Dream House is situated in the heart of the beautiful town of Mito, completely surrounded by mountains. The Oda river runs through the town. As well as the peacefulness of the surrounding countryside, the building itself brings comfort with its simplistic, open design spread out over 2 floors. The host is able to communicate in both Japanese and English having lived abroad for many years. The first floor of the building is a large multipurpose hall which is used for events and classes that introduce Japanese Calligraphy, Sumi Painting and other artistic aspects of Japanese culture to the locals as well as visitors from the rest of Japan and from abroad. As you enter the building, you will be met with a little shop, the reception area and the first W/C. Walking further into the hall, you will find shared 2 shower rooms, a sink area and a lounge. In Spring and Autumn, this space holds residential courses for students from all over the world who wish to learn the art forms in more depth. As for the bedrooms, they are all upstairs. You will also find the second W/C and another lounge with kitchen facilities (the ‘Moon’ room). (but not for cooking here). At the end of the corridor, there are 2 Japanese style tatami rooms with futons (‘Sky’ and ‘Wind’ rooms). There are also 3 western style rooms with beds (‘Earth’, ‘Water’ and ‘Fire’ rooms). Every room comes with an A/C and heating unit as well as simple storage shelves. Also in the corridor, there are safe boxes, cleaning equipment and a cupboard with extra bedding. In the adjoining building sits Momiji cafeteria and the Staff room. For group or long stay guests can request meals with an additional price. The meals can range from Western to Japanese style and are all homemade by our amazing staff. The garden chairs and tables are free to use whenever you please with the beautiful Mountain views. Dream House also provides free Wi-Fi as well as free parking.

Dream House is situated in the centre of Oda, Mito. As you leave the Ogori - Hagi motorway at the Oda exit, there is a 7/11 shop. At that intersection, if you follow the number 30 road and head towards Hagi, you will find the sign board of Dream House on the right just before Nafco shop. Once you turn into the grounds, it would be best to park on the left, close to the front of the building. It is 19km from Shin-Yamaguchi station and 38.6km from Ube Domestic Airport. Dream House is also close to many shops and a bus stop which is quite convenient compared to other areas in Mito. Yunokuchi bus stop is a 2 minute walk away while Oda Chouo bus stop is 10 minutes away. From Yunokuchi or Oda Chuo bus stop, you are able to go to Hagi, Ogori, Yamaguchi city and Mine city very easily.
