In the village of Figueira, located in the picturesque parish of Budens, there was an oral tradition that was passed down from generation to generation, telling the story of the founders of the village and how their lives were intertwined with the roots of the families that lived there... In the 18th century, the village was a small cluster of white houses, surrounded by robust fibers that provided shade and food for the residents... known for their great kindness and wisdom, they believed that the trees were not only sources of food, but also guardians of the village's soul. A legend remains from that time... The Legend of the Mother Fig Tree tells of a gigantic tree located in the center of the village and according to this legend it was thought that its roots stretched throughout the village, connecting to all the other fig trees. It is said that, on nights with a full moon, the Mother Fig Tree would whisper secrets and advice to those who knew how to listen. Many residents claimed to have found solutions to their problems after spending a night at the foot of that tree, listening to its whispers in the wind… Today, Vila Figueira in Budens is still a place where fig trees continue to grow… Somewhere, the Figueira Mãe still stands majestically, a silent witness to generations that have emerged there. Its inhabitants try to keep the memory of their ancestors alive through popular festivals and celebrations, where stories from “the old days” are told and retold, ensuring that the essence of Vila Figueira is not lost. At Casa da Figueira - Guest House, you will find a daughter of this Figueira Mãe… and in its courtyard you can sit and “listen, in the wind, to its whisper”… it was she who called us when we were looking for a little corner on the Costa Vicentina (a protected area), a house near the westernmost point of Europe (Sagres), in a less developed and less busy region compared to other tourist areas in Portugal, providing a haven of peace and tranquility

We are a family like so many others... mother, father... daughters, and now there are also grandchildren... so in this family there are grandchildren, children, mothers, fathers and grandparents! And in each family there is a house, beds, kitchen, living room... and so on! We, in this family, have three (3) houses, in the village of Odiáxere on the outskirts of Lagos, in the village of Figueira on the outskirts of Vila do Bispo (Costa Vicentina) and in the village of Gonçalo on the outskirts of Guarda (Serra da Estrela). There are many of us in this family... but not so many anymore and at the same time in each of these houses, and so we thought we could share... share - to whomever they speak to the Soul (an expression often used by Grandma Virgínia) - all these houses, beds and kitchens, as well as the walks, the visits, the serenity and all the gastronomic suggestions (vegetarian, raw or local) in each of the regions. What makes this proposal unique... is the individuality, privacy and autonomy it offers, even though it is local accommodation...

This town, whose origins date back to medieval times (since there are references to its existence in 1374), has a distinctly rural landscape, surrounded by hills and dotted with cultivated land and several windmills (or traces of them). It is worth walking through its streets and seeing some typical houses, passing by its contemporary temple, dedicated to Our Lady of Fátima, its old school and following the path towards Praia da Figueira, through a landscape of vegetable gardens. Praia da Figueira is only accessible by foot. It is located approximately 900m from the car park that serves it. However, the necessary walking route, in addition to being very easy, is very interesting as it passes traditional vegetable gardens and waterwheels and due to the superb natural beauty that surrounds it. Seasoned with marked characteristics of Mediterranean influence, the beach has a small sandy area, guarded, on the eastern flank, by the ruins of the old Fort of Vera Cruz da Figueira. To the west, the view reaches the neighbouring beach, Furnas. It is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
