Gerze 2017 yılında Kelime kökeni İtalyanca "Citta (Şehir)", İngilizce "Slow (Yavaş)" kelimelerinin birleşmesiyle türetilen Cittaslow, "Sakin Şehir" anlamında kullanılan Belediyeler Birliği üyesidir. Cittaslow hareketinin başlıca felsefesi, şehirlerin kendi kimliklerine sahip çıkmalarına, küreselleşmenin sevimsiz sonuçları olarak ortaya çıkan kentlerin birbirlerine benzemesine engel olmalarına ve onlardan ayrılmalarına dayanıyor. Cittaslow kentlerde, yerel yemeklere, yöresel mimariye, gelenek, görenek, kültür ve yerel halka sahip çıkılması ve desteklenmesi sağlanıyor. Gerze ilçesi, antik çağlardan bu yana toplumlar tarafından yerleşme ve barınak yeri olarak seçilmiştir. MÖ 1400 yıllarında Gaşgalılar (Gasgaslar) tarafından küçük bir köy olarak kurulan Gerze, daha sonra Paflagonya Devleti'nin eline geçmiş, sırasıyla da Hitit, Frig, Kimmer, Lidya, Pers, Büyük İskender, Roma ve Bizans İmparatorluklarının egemenliğine girmiştir. 1459 yılında da Fatih Sultan Mehmet tarafından Osmanlı imparatorluğu'na bağlanmıştır. Paflagonyalılar Kızılırmak'ın batı yöresine mızraklılar ülkesi anlamına gelen Gezonolit adını vermişlerdir. Gerze adının buradan geldiği sanılmaktadır.
