Flanked by Camdeboo National Park, 12 km from historic Graaff-Reinet, Sunbird Cottage is in a game conservancy on a working cattle farm. The farm is fully solar. Newly restored, Sunbird Cottage is an ideal base for walking, photography, mountain biking, etc. Fully self-catering, 1 king bed with en suite bathroom, aircon, fireplace, bbq facilities, wifi. Simple cottage for peace and quiet on typical Karoo farm. Having your own vehicle is essential. The road is regularly graded, but corrugations persist. A 4x4 is not a necessity but we strongly advise at least a high clearance vehicle, just for your own convenience. Please note that while many saloon/low slung vehicles visit, this is at your own risk, most especially if it rains when the road can become very boggy and occasionally impassable, so if you have a non 4x4 please book at own risk. Cycling routes are available, but please bring your own bikes Having a mountain bike, running shoes or sturdy boots are also advisable, to better enjoy your experience on the property. Please come prepared for extremely hot days in summer and cold winter nights. Please also note that this is an African farm where insects, snakes, heat, cold, baboons etc all coexist and it is up to you to ensure you are vigilant. Please note that the aircons are provided for cooling the houses in the hot summer months, not for heating. Blankets, duvets and hot water bottles are provided and each house has a fireplace. The farm is offgrid, and using the aircons for heating drains the system during the short, winter days.

Restoring the farm and its historic buildings is an ongoing project with great reward in rehabilitating the veld, re-eastablishing the farmhouse gardens, farming cattle, reintroducing wildlife and all the while being part of a living, vibrant community in Graaff Reinet. It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome guests from all over SA and many parts of the world to enjoy this peaceful escape. The cottage is self check in and we leave guests to enjoy their privacy, although we live on the farm and are available should you need us, or wish for guidance on farm trails etc.

Sunbird cottage is located on a working cattle farm 15 minutes from the historica town of Graaff Reinet. Graaff-Reinet is one of the oldest towns in South Africa and among the most beautiful. There is a strong Cape Dutch architectural influence and the wide streets are lined with jacaranda and flamboyant trees. There are charming restaurants, museums and cafes, antique shops, spas, a bookshop, deli, and other local businesses, as well as larger country-wide chains for clothing, grocery and equipment purchases. The town is surrounded largely by national park, farms and private game reserves.
