They went above and beyond to accommodate our special dietary needs, showing exceptional care and effort. Their kindness and high level of service made our stay special - thanks! The onsens were a highlight—especially the outdoor ones. The variety of both private and shared baths allowed us to enjoy peaceful, relaxing moments in beautiful surroundings. As it's a smaller ryokan, the atmosphere was intimate and personal, which made our experience more unique. We stayed for two nights, and the ryokan surprised us with two different dining experiences in two separate rooms. It was a fun and memorable touch—and the food was excellent on both nights, beautifully presented with great attention to detail. We highly recommend Ryokan Yamanoyu and would love to return one day. Thank you for making our stay so special!

The staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, our waitress for our dinner was very fun to converse with, along with everyone else we spoke with. The location is also excellent in the middle of everything, allowing for an easy walk around Kurokawa.

We really enjoyed our stay.
We booked a room with its own outside onsen tub, which was excellent. As we had our own private onsen, we did not use the common bathing facilities.
As there are no restaurants anywhere near the hotel, we ate both breakfast and dinner at the hotel each day. They prepared different meals for us each time, and the meal presentation and taste were outstanding.
The staff were also excellent, and attended to our every request. Several staff members were able to speak English as we can't speak any Japanese.
The location is a bit out of town along a winding forest road. It would be impossible to get to the hotel without a car and google maps.
With the meals our stay was somewhat expensive but we would definitely stay again when we are in the area.

Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Situated in the centre of the Kurokawa Onsen Area and boasting a total of 8 indoor/outdoor hot spring baths, Nanjoen offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with tatami (woven-straw) flooring and futon bedding. We had a wonderful experience at Nanjoen...the Kaiseki dinner was fantastic, the staff was kind and helpful, location was terrific.
Kurokawa Onsen, Minamioguni
Boasting various indoor and open-air hot spring baths, Fumoto Ryokan offers traditional Japanese-style accommodation with a historic charm. It is surrounded by serene greenery next to a river. Free Wi-Fi is available at the public area. I stayed one night at Fumoto Ryokan (Kurokawa Onsen) and was genuinely very satisfied. The ryokan is traditional and understated—wood, stone, soft lighting—nothing flashy, but immediately calming. There are many baths, indoor and outdoor, and you never feel rushed; you can soak as much as you like. A small wooden bridge runs through the property, and in the evening, when the lights come on, the atmosphere is quietly beautiful. What really exceeded my expectations was the dinner. I didn’t expect much, but it turned out to be excellent—on par with high-level kaiseki. The ingredients were generous and high quality: a full plate of wagyu, fresh horse sashimi, and dishes that were clean, precise, and well-balanced. In Kyoto, a dinner like this for two would easily cost around ¥150,000. At night, sleeping on tatami with the sound of the river outside was incredibly comfortable. Service was warm and attentive without being intrusive. One practical note: most people arrive via the Kyushu Odan Bus, which only runs three times a day, so tickets must be booked in advance. The ryokan can arrange pickup from Kurokawa Onsen. In the low season, it’s around ¥20,000+ per night for two, including dinner. I found it very good value—and I’d happily stay again.

Great ryokan with indoor and outdoor onsen and comfortable rooms. We had the breakfast which was very nice, no problem in having it vegetarian too. English is a bit of a problem but manageable.
This is not your typical ryokan but a modern one where nobody will wake you up at 7am for breakfast. Here, you can (almost) sleep as you please. 9 bungalows for 9 rooms. Each room has its own private onsen, one indoor and the other outdoor, in addition to the bigger "public" one. Staff is great. Dinner is superb, and so is breakfast. It's far, a bit remote but you must go for a peaceful and very charming moment.
Multiple public onsen (main, cave, river, indoor), multiple private onsen available, garden around the ryokan
It was wonderful that they had an outdoor onsen pool by the riverside where you can see and listen to the man-made waterfall. The number of private family onsens were also pretty good, less waiting time for a private onsen bath.
Service was excellent, staff were very friendly and welcoming. Both dinner and breakfast were exceptionally delicious, wide variety of dishes and we were very full after both meals. Private onsen inside the room was spacious and clean. the room itself was generously large too. Out of all the ryokans I have stayed in Japan, this room was one of the largest. The ryokan is located just a 5 min walk to the main area where you can see the lanterns illuminate at night. Highly recommended!
Great Ryokan! Way beyond my expectation - 3 private onsen rooms you can use without reservation and 2 public onsen. - Rooms are spacious, new, and comfortable. There is Kotatsu table in the room, very warm and cozy! - There are lovely facilities you can use and experience such as star observatory, library, and the vintage fireplace room that has free sake serving! - Staffs are very polite and helpful.
First stay at a ryokan- a unique Japanese experience. Had a very relaxing stay overall and the location of the ryokan is perfectly situated to explore Kurokawa. The staff were extremely helpful and tried to explain things the best they could despite the language barrier. The indoor onsen was small but relaxing, it made my skin feel really nice the next day. I personally didn't try the outdoor onsen however my partner did and said that the smell was quite strong.
Clean, spacious room with comfortable futons, amenities and everything included. Private onsen hot enough, indoor and outdoor onsen was clean, big and free flowing. Small ryokan so it is quiet and intimate. Service was attentive.
This was my first ryokan experience and the staff took great care in explaining all the procedures and expectations to me :) They were very sweet and assisted me in any request. The room, while one of the smallest, had plenty of space and faced directly onto the river. The private onsen and public bath were great; I specially enjoyed the outdoor onsen. The food was of very good quality and plenty. The Kurokawa Onsen village is quaint for a short afternoon stroll.
Great ryokan experience in a traditional small onsen town. Good availability of onsens both private and public, but even had public onsens to myself as a private onsen. I can highly recommend the outdoor onsens. Also makes a good base to visit Mt Aso for walks.
