I loved our stay at Shikitei with its timeless beautiful, excellent service and scrumptious food. I will definitely have to come back! Excellent location - Ryokan is situated right at Nara Park! This traditional ryokan has kept it timeless beauty with breathtaking views. It is well maintained with lots of care. Excellent service from the staff. They were always tucked away but quietly waiting to see if you needed anything. The staff were local and so English wasn’t fluent but there were no communication issues. The welcome tea ceremony was a traditional one. The matcha tea was frothy and slightly bitter served with a small red bean cake sweet. We wouldn’t want to try it anywhere else such a great experience! After this we were brought to our room where there was yet another yummy plum salty tea with small sweet! The room was beautiful with excellent view! The futon sleep with the stiff pillow was so comfy! The Onsen at the ryokan opens early and closed later. The facilities were great with all bath amenities provided. Our stay had half board with kaiseki dinner and then traditional Japanese breakfast. Both meals you will be enjoying a work of visual art and scrumptious melodies of flavours. Beside us were all Japan nationals so you know you are at the right place of their own resident visit for short vacays! Such a magnificent stay! I will definitely return!!!

Amazing little place! Exceeded my expectations and was gutted we were only here for the night. Brilliant location in Nara - close to both stations. The location and the vibe. It's close enough to the main attractions (especially with the shuttle bus service), yet offers sufficient respite from the bustling city. The facilities are great and as shown in photos. The room is clean and comfy. The meals provided are awesome and with lots of varieties to let us have a taste of the various traditional Japanese food. Last and most importantly, the service is really top-notch. Special thanks to Sho-san for making sure we are well taken care of.

The interior design was luxurious and highly detailed in lacquer, marble, 2-tone chrome...similar to the old Capital or Okura before refurb. There are original chairs and light fixtures here,as well. I think the Nara Royal used to be on the edge of town overlooking the ancient Prefectural Halls in the rice fields (and on top of a natural hot spring)...now it is in town but close to 2 major thrifting shops! Service was top notch the whole way through.

It's just steps away from the train station, convenient entrance on the 2nd floor. We arrived late night, speed check-in process, breakfast was great, staff friendly and helpful. Nara has a lot going on.

Nara has a lot going on. Lots of wonderful food, decent shopping and the Park is huge! There is way more to the park that is initially revealed in tourism blogs. We really loved early morning walks thought the park without the crowds. We spent 3 days there, and felt like it was perfect.

I really enjoyed my stay.

I really enjoyed my stay. The area is peaceful and the hotel has a very relaxed, but high-end vibe, minus amenities like pool, gym, restaurants. Although they have a nice restaurant next door with grocery/gift shop. The staff are wonderful and make you feel very welcomed! The hotel is at a base of the mountain and is outside the city which is worked for me, but if you need to be in the center till late, you will need to chip out the $10 taxi ride from the station. Will definitely visit again!

i liked the Kashihara Jingu and the visit to various burial places of former tenno. on my last day, i visited the Omiwa Jinja; there is an observation hill where you could watch the sunset over Kashihara city. walking around town however, you can notice the signs of declining population and abandoned shops. there are a few good ramen shops in the area if you know where to find them, like Saika Ramen, highly recommended for its spicy flavour.

Visited in autumn for the autumn colours, but it was warmer than expected so there weren't many colours. Silver lining was that is was very quiet! No lines for the stores, as there might have been in cherry blossom season or when the colours were full. Really enjoyed walking the mountain.

Nara is my favorite place in Japan.

Nara is my favorite place in Japan. It has really beautiful natural environment, lovely deer that you can easily see while walking on the street, and very friendly people. It has played a very important role in Japanese history (e.g. Horyuji, Toshodaija, etc. are important world heritage sites), but it does not have that many visitors as Kyoto, which makes traveling in Nara a lot more pleasant than travelling in Kyoto. I highly recommend people to travel to southern part of Nara Prefecture (e.g. Horyuji, Asuka-dera, Tsubosaka-dera, Oka-dera, etc.).
