Room ( and actually almost a suite without a cushion), was quirky, comfortable, quiet, well furnished, unique, just a few steps off a piazza in centre of old town. Owner was helpful and available but not intrusive. Owner brings breakfast on a tray in the morning at a time that guest requests.

Albergo Bologna is located in Varese's historic centre, 5 minutes' walk from the main square. It was once part of a monastery dating back to 1550.

Our host met us near the albergo and directed us to the secure parking area then helped take our bags to the lift which carried us to the first floor. We had lunch at the restaurant and ate there every day we were in Varese as the food was so good. I wish we could have stayed there for another week. Varese would be a good base to explore the Italian lakes. As it was, there was plenty to do, including the walk to Sacro Monte, 2kms of winding path past 14 glorious little chapels with views on every side. It would be worth doing the walk over a weekend as there is a museum at the top of the hill which looked very interesting but it's only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Pamela and her husband are very friendly, they upgraded our room and even offered us breakfast. The room is cozy and well equipped, with a nice view on the garden. The bed is very comfortable.
