Everything was so chic and modern in a traditional area. It’s this new wave of Japanese accommodation that is very impressive. It’s a little pricey, but absolutely worth every cent in my opinion.

Nipponia Izumo Hirata Cotton Road ligt in Izumo, op minder dan 1 km van Atagoyama Park, en biedt accommodatie met een tuin, gratis privéparkeren en een restaurant. Having been to Izumo before and knowing it would not disappoint, I decided to take my family for another vacation in January. We stayed at Nipponia Izumo - Hirata Cotton Road for three nights. It is a former traditional sake brewery house converted into a kominka style hotel. Situated on a quiet historical sake and soy sauce business street, the hotel not only provided a unique home sweet home service but also amazing fine dining experience. Their in-house chef made each meal using local products to create feasts that delighted the senses. I highly recommend this hidden gem of an accommodation if you do visit Izumo.

Ryokan Nushiya bevindt zich in Gotsu, op 13 km van Gotsu City General Citizen Center Milky Way Hall, en biedt accommodatie met een tuin, gratis privéparkeren, een terras en een restaurant. Secluded area, very quiet. Loved the outdoor onsen in my room, especially on cold days, the contrast is awesome. They had 2 private indoor solo onsens that were FCFS, and a large community shared one. Kaiseki meal was great. Wish there was more beef as it was awesome.

縁の宿 北堀 bevindt zich in Matsue, op 2 minuten lopen van Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, en biedt accommodatie met gratis WiFi en gratis privéparkeren. The staff were very helpful and pleasant, the food was among the best food we had on our entire japan trip. We traveled with one vegetarian and they were able to make great vegetarian food as well which we really appreciated! The inn was cozy and well managed and we had everything we needed. The location by the river and so close to Matsue Castle was also amazing. We can recommend this inn and Matsue city to everyone interested in seeing a different japan!

Hoshi Ryokan is gelegen op 1,2 km van heiligdom Taikodani Inari en 1,9 km van Tsuwano Joushi, en biedt kamers met airconditioning en een gedeelde badkamer in Tsuwano. Hoshi Ryokan is so good that staying there justifies the trip to Tsuwano all by itself. An immense tatami room (actually two, a bedroom and a sitting room) plus a veranda to sit and watch the world go by. The owners are extremely gentle and helpful (they picked us up from the station even if it is only just across the road, just because it was raining so hard) and the breakfast and dinner are well worth having, and not only because there are few other options in town. And you stay in a real family home, the way B&B used to be.

Saginoyusou is gelegen op 24 km van Shinji-meer en 27 km van Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, en biedt kamers in Yasugi. My first 10 rating. Our room was fantastic, with a large sitting area, separate sleeping area with comfortable beds and private outdoor onsen. Staff were uniformly friendly, helpful and polite. Our meals were excellent and very filling. Each large window in our room looked out on different areas of an impeccably designed garden. We are already planning our next visit.

Onsen Guest House Aobato no Su biedt accommodatie met overal gratis WiFi in Matsue, op een steenworp afstand van Tamatsukuri Onsen. Er is gratis privéparkeergelegenheid bij de accommodatie. Fantastic! Little towns like this will often have old-skool ryokans and cheaper alternatives (minshuku, hostels) that aren't nearly as good. This place is the perfect, more reasonably-priced, alternative to the big ol' ryokans. Was expecting a minshuku-looking place but, no, from the very first impression this was a lovely, big, beautiful place with a cool vibe. The staff were very sweet, the bath was small but much nicer than you'd expect for the price and the room was very spacioius indeed. Breakfast was dead good and the older gentelman who played the shamisen and told us tales of the area was lovely. Would 100% stay here again.
