The location was elite, staff were super lovely and helpful, breaky was a huge variety and delicious, everything was clean and well kept. You can snowboard straight into the accom from the main end of the slope and it’s right between chairlifts, while being close to the main gondola. We got our lift passes through the accom too at a good rate. There’s great restaurants around in walking distance. We thoroughly enjoyed staying here and will be back.

The staff was very kind, as expected from a family owned ryokan. The bath area is small, but you schedule your personal bath time. Food is incredible, a must try when visiting Zao. Location is near the main attractions, like the cable car is reachable by walking. Lots of nearby onsens.

Pension Puutaro ligger i Zao Onsen, 6 minutters gang fra Zao Skiresort. Her en have og en restaurant samt gratis wi-fi overalt. Der er desuden røgfrie værelser. Excellent service! The staff at Pension Puutaro were incredibly friendly and attentive, going above and beyond to make my stay comfortable. Highly recommend for their exceptional hospitality!

Tendo Hotel ligger i Tendo, 30 km fra Zao Skiresort, og har gratis cykler, et fælles opholdsområde og gratis privat parkering. The staff was very friendly. I wanted to make dinner reservations and the staff attempted to call different restaurants for me.

Yamagata Zao Pension Apron Stage ligger i Kaminoyama, 2,3 km fra Zao Skiresort. Dette overnatningssted med 3 stjerner har en have, en terrasse og en restaurant. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.

The moment you enter the Ryokan, how welcoming the staff, being served nice cold welcome drinks and hot towels as the check in process happened at the sofa and not at a counter. This Ryokan though small in size provides the homely feel. The meals (dinner and breakfast) were both excellent. We enjoyed it very much.The public bath was nicely decorated too. The owners of the Ryokan definitely placed a lot of efforts to it's design, decorations etc. My husband and I wished we were staying another night instead of our overnight stay. We will return.

Yamagata The Takinami ligger i Nanyo, 32 km fra Zao Skiresort, og har en have, en restaurant og gratis privat parkering. beautiful building, excellent public space, delicious and beautiful meals.

Wakamatsuya ligger i Zao Onsen, 3 minutters gang fra Zao Skiresort, og har en have, et fælles opholdsområde og en terrasse samt gratis privat parkering. The hotel was lovely and staff were excellent. Great location and an easy walk to the ski field and village for dinner. I stayed in a traditional Japanese room and the view of the village was beautiful. The staff were always helpful and very friendly. Highly recommend.
