Departure point for Isle of Wight ferries and grand cruise liners including the Queen Mary 2, Southampton is understandably centred around its port. But even if you’re passing through, the city has more than enough to make you want to stay awhile. The Hythe Ferry from the port passes Netley, site of a ruined abbey, and ends at Hythe Pier, home to the world’s oldest pier train.
There is much older history in the city centre where the 15th-century city walls are amongst the most complete in England. Also remaining is the medieval Bargate gatehouse.
Just behind is the Bargate Shopping Centre, while high street stores in the city centre and West Quay are other Southampton shopping choices. As for entertainment, the city is well served by theatres, and Oxford Street has the best bars and restaurants. All are easily reached from the apartments, B&Bs and hotels in Southampton available on Booking.com.
There is also a surprising amount of green space in the city and its central parks are Grade II-listed. Slightly further out is Southampton Common, whose Urban Wildlife Centre is worth a visit.
If you’re flying out of Southampton Airport, don’t leave without having visited the Maritime Museum or Archaeology Museum, both detailing the history of this long-established city.

This was my second stay in Southampton and I have enjoyed it both times. There is plenty to see with the museums and galleries. The food options are very good with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from. I really liked all the parks and open spaces. Taxis are easy to get and you can also pre book which is what we did to get back and forth to the cruise terminal. We traveled in and out of Southampton airport and it is a great airport as it is small and friendly and probably nicest airport experience I have ever had.

The Pub across the road does not serve food.
The Pub across the road does not serve food. There are several places to eat roughly 1 mile away, a 15 minute walk. The Mayflower Village Pub served excellent meals and drinks. Ristorante Italiano also served very good Italian food. There is a Subway close by that is open for breakfast. We Ubered from the bus station and to the cruise terminal.

We went to Southampton to go to the Mayflower theatre which is good value compared to London theatres. It has lots of shows and good facilities. We will go back. We also had a good dinner at Papillon which is opposite the theatre. We stayed at the Ibis which is good value and well located for the Mayflower.
Wow the hotel was so lovely,I informed them it was for our Anniversary and our room was upgraded and we had a lovely bottle of prosecco on ice and chocolates and a card in our room with rose petals such a lovely touch and very much appreciated thankyou so much 😍.we

Such a lovely clean hotel breakfast was fab and all staff lovely and friendly.
Thankyou for a great stay i would return to this hotel again if I stayed in Southampton again, superb
Wonderful apartment right off High Street - we loved our king bed with a nice view towards Town Quay Park, and our own private bathroom off the hall, across the room. Great location, walkable around the old city with its interesting past, its many still-intact walls, and Titanic history. Joe was very personable, and we enjoyed some interesting chats together. We appreciated the morning coffee, cereal and toast before starting our day. Would definitely stay again at Joe's place if we are ever back in Southampton!
The building itself is imposing, stately and elegant, many guests could be seen outside taking pictures of the hotel soon after arrival. We had a beautiful spacious room looking out over the gardens at the rear of the hotel. Simple but very elegant and very comfortable. The grounds outside were exceptionally photogenic at the time we were there at the beginning of May. The location is within 30mins of Southampton and 30mins from the New Forest so travel to both is very easy.
This is a lovely hotel, in front of a nice park and just around the corner from Oxford Street, with its restaurants. Easy walk to the old part of town and the city centre. The staff were lovely and very efficient. We were upgraded to a very nice room, my teenage son was happy with his "berth" up a ladder and I slept very well in a very large and comfy bed. We had a dinner table and kitchen so had dinner in the room, everything we needed was provided.
The breakfast was superb - apart form the re-hydrated Scrambled egg. Everything was beautifully presented and the food area was spotlessly clean. Great selection of tasty foods. Something for everyone.
The lighting in the room / bathroom was lovely.
The communal social areas were fabulous.
pillows were super comfy
Plenty of sockets and charging spaces around the hotel.
Nice touch with the welcome drink.
I had travelled by train and it’s just 10/15 mins walk from station I had ground floor room which was lovely very clean plenty tea coffee etc just could not find a fault also great communication right up to day of arrival they don’t serve breakfast which was fine I brought mine I would highly recommend this Hotel easy walk into town too and if cruising from new cruise terminal Horizon it’s a 20/25 min walk
Southampton Harbour hotel, like the hotels in its chain was just brilliant but with the added character and the feeling of being on the water.
the staff couldn’t do anything more for us.
The room was spacious and clean, and the bed was phenomenal.
we ate and drank in HarBar on 6th in the evening which had a great atmosphere.
Then breakfast in the morning was fantastic, with a great varied menu!
Superb location for Southampton town centre and our visit to the Mayflower theatre. Everything is within walking distance. This hotel has an incredible breakfast selection to set you up for your day and the indoor pool and sauna was a wonderful treat. All the staff we spoke to were welcoming, professional and kind. We liked the added security touches on the foyer doors and our room was great.
The room was super clean. The staff were amazing! Professional, polite and smiling all the time!
The hotel’s location is perfect, in the city center just 4 minutes from the bus stop.
I enjoyed staying here to the max, thank you to the grapes staff!
Hotel well located for easy access to the train station. Bed very comfortable. Great views of the docked cruise ships from level 3.Good to have a window that was openable for fresh air. Staff are very friendly and efficient.
Very close to the cruise terminal and the bus station which was really convenient. Staff was friendly and efficient. A lower budget hotel almost like a hostel but comfortable. Close to town and shopping.
Great location for IOW ferry and short walk into Southampton old town.
Breakfast was superb.
Comfortable room with a good shower and large bed.
