FAQs about hotels in Bologna

A Gourmet Delight

World-class cuisine is what Bologna does best. Nowhere in Italy, a country with considerable culinary heritage, is the food considered better than in this medieval gem.

Bolognese sauce of course originated here, but to try the real thing look out for ragú on the menu. Cold meats and cheeses are also exquisite. Make sure you save plenty of time for eating – the Bolognese like to savour their food, so a meal can last for hours.

Many of the best eateries and homemade ice cream shops can be found behind the mile upon mile of porticoed streets, now UNESCO World Heritage listed. The complex of medieval churches and buildings in cobbled Piazza Santo Stefano is a tranquil spot to explore. Climb one of the Two Towers nearby (not the one leaning at a startling angle) for spectacular views over this red-roofed city.

The focal point of Bologna is huge Piazza Maggiore, whose Santo Petronio church has an unimpressive, half-finished façade that doesn’t prepare you for its sheer scale inside. Fanning out from this square are the buildings of Europe’s oldest university, founded in 1088 and home to the city’s best museums.

Bologna accommodation on Booking.com ranges from small B&Bs to luxury hotels, all easily accessible from Bologna Airport just outside the city.

Our favorite place is Centro Commerciale Centronova and...

Our favorite place is Centro Commerciale Centronova and Trattoria La Montanara. We ate great burgers in the restaurant and traditional Bolognese cuisine in the trattoria. In Bologna we traveled by bus and car. Both options are NOT problematic. Of course the small streets are difficult, but it's not a problem. You just have to be aware of Italian driving, sometimes it's stupid and thoughtless. I would recommend not going to the great basilica of San Petronio. The staff is terrible, they have stupid rules - for example take off your hat, and it's raining and cold outside!!! A huge basilica, but inside it is very dark and nothing can be seen. Almost all niches are closed and not illuminated. There was an uncle who wouldn't let you into the only open niche - it was for those praying!!!! And there is no one!!!! We have been to many places and cathedrals and basilicas, but nothing like this. The basilica itself remains unfinished. There are very few drawings, and nothing can be seen from the darkness. Pure waste of time. There are churches and cathedrals nearby - San Pietro Cathedral, it's very beautiful and everything can be photographed with flash.

Bologna is a great city escape for 3-4 days.

Bologna is a great city escape for 3-4 days. You can easily walk through the old streets of the town, which are full of architectural treasures. There are more than enough places to sample all the delicacies of Tuscany, such as cold cuts & cheeses, pasta dishes and of course a great aperitivo to end your day.

A little gem in the heart of Bologna! Staff excellent, property was fabulous, room very clean and a decent size for one person with a king bed. Breakfast included, the night I was going to eat in at the property restaurant it was closed for a private function. So the front desk staff made a suggestion to call a local restaurant who would deliver and within 30mins, I had a hot meal in my room! Also had a private massage in my room and a private car to the airport all arranged by this hotel and staff. Would highly recommend this hotel!

Small compact hotel that is an oasis with lovely small garden with diverse mature pines & conifers on the outskirts of Bologna, convenient to the airport in a slightly commercial area. Lovely mosaic pebbled ground floor reception & dining area, with lovely paintings too. Bedrooms with lovely high ceilings, minimalist nice touches ie the ringed ceiling lampshade, comfy beds with funky orange bed heads, lovely tiled bathrooms with marble effect, nice shower. Nice decor, particularly the red chairs in dining area. Nice breakfast

Great location in central Bologna. This hotel is steps from Via Ugo Bassi and a 5-minute walk to Piazza Maggiore, perfect for anyone who wants a lower budget location for the heart of Bologna. There is a comfortable lounge for relaxing, if the rooms are too small to relax. They have rooms for single travelers, with smaller beds. There is an elevator, which is a good thing, since there are 5 floors. They have a large luggage storage room, as well.

Breakfast in the garden was a lovely start to each day with plenty of selection. Reasons to stay at Phi Hotel Bologna Al Capello Rosso: Extensive breakfast options including Greek yogurts and cheeses. Good multilingual staff helping guests with luggage and logistics. Excellent bed in the apartment I booked that was around the corner from the historic main hotel. I appreciated that they called me to ask whether I wanted to change my room type after I requested a bathtub. But the apartment, which is shower-only, was lovely.
